MLK Day of Service grant for Backpacks on a Mission

Our grant for 2018 was awarded on November, 2017 for $4,000.00.

With this grant we were able to purchase packaged food that was used to fill backpacks for the students at three of our community elementary schools. In 2018, we were serving 150 children and with this grant, we were able to serve them for four months.

A food drive was held at SSUMC where the parishioners graciously donated non perishable food items for the Backpacks on a Mission pantry.

On the MLK Day of Service, SSUMC and HCC Student Government volunteers picked up the order from SAM’S and delivered it to SSUMC, stocking the Backpacks on a Mission pantry.

During MLK week, Corr Elementary School and Summerfield Crossings Elementary School held MLK Essay Contests where 316 3rd graders researched and wrote their essays on Dr. King. 33 finalists w

ere chosen from these students to present their essays to a team of judges. Gift cards from Walmart was given to the top three finalists. All other finalists received Honorable Mention Certificates. A children’s book on the history and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King was given to all 33 finalists. They all learned lessons of charity, love and community spirit through their research of Dr. King’s life.
