RECEIVING SPECIAL OFFERING FOR 2024 ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON NINTH SUNDAY

Bishop Tom Berlin invites all Florida Conference Churches to receive a special offering in anticipation of the Florida Annual Conference Gathering to support a new conference-wide grant that will make financial gifts possible to churches that have or would like to start food security programs for local school children – like South Shore’s Backpacks On A Mission.

Read more below and plan to give generously on Sunday, June 2nd.

In the diverse landscape of Florida, hunger knows no boundaries, impacting individuals from all walks of life. When Americans teeter on the edge of food insecurity, children face the greatest level of vulnerability and harm. The USDA revealed that more than 13 million children grappled with hunger in 2022 alone. In Florida, hunger’s grip extends far and wide, affecting approximately 2.2 million residents, with over 660,000 being children. In Central Florida one in five children lived in households that were food insecure. Our children in Florida do not have enough food. When children have enough food, they can thrive everyday.

Amidst this challenge in Florida, our local United Methodist churches stand as beacons of hope, actively engaged in nourishing the bodies and souls of children within their communities. Now, we have the chance to bolster these efforts and extend our reach even further. You are doing the good work of caring for your community in many ways. Our congregations are making a difference.

The Florida Conference is proud to announce the launch of a grant program made possible by this offering. It will support programs of local churches across the Conference who currently provide food to children or who want to start a new ministry to families who deal with food insecurity. Through these grants, churches will have the resources to initiate or sustain feeding projects specifically tailored to address childhood hunger.

PRAYER FOR MEMORIAL DAY

(from The United Methodist Book of Worship)

Almighty God, before whom stand the living and the dead, we your children, whose mortal life is but a hand’s breadth, give thanks to you:

For all those through whom you have blessed our pilgrimage, whose lives that have empowered us, whose influence is a healing grace, we lift up thankful hearts.

For the dear friends and family members whose faces we see now more, but whose love is with us for ever, we lift up thankful hearts.

For the teachers and companions of our childhood and youth, and for the members of our household of faith who worship you now in heaven, we lift up thankful hearts.

For those who sacrificed themselves, our brothers, sisters, and siblings who have given their lives for the sake of others, we lift up thankful hearts.

That we may hold them all in continual remembrance, and ever think of them as with you in that city whose gates are not shut by day and where there is no night, we lift up thankful hearts.

That we may now be dedicated to working for a world where labor is rewarded, fear dispelled, and the nations made one, O Lord, save your people and bless your heritage. Day by day we magnify you, and worship your name, for ever and ever, Amen.

SSUMC CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED IN OBSERVANCE OF MEMORIAL DAY

Regular Church Office Hours resume Tuesday, May 28.

SHORE KIDS & SHORE YOUTH ARE ON THE CASE

Shore Kids and Shore Youth are teaming up this summer for a blended whole family worship experience. For the first Sunday of each month this summer, we will be trying to unravel a mystery! There will be clues, games to get clues, and, of course, a lot of fun. So bring your thinking caps as we try to unravel a mystery!

Sundays June 2nd, July 7th, August 4th, and September 1st

Time: 5:00-6:30pm Location: SSUMC Worship Center

Order of Events: Potluck Dinner, opening skit, collecting clues and getting closer to solving the mystery, message by Andrew Miller, families release, and Shore Youth continues to Small Group.

Bring a shareable dish and your thinking caps because we are ON THE CASE!

RSVP to Mr. Scotty via scotty@southshoreumc.com

REMINDER: FIRST SUNDAY FOOD PANTRY NEXT SUNDAY

Please bring donations and place them in the shopping cart in the welcome center.

Your donations support our partnership with Restore Food Pantry at Riverview First UMC and bring relief to hunger experienced by the most vulnerable in our community.

SPECIAL REQUESTS FOR JUNE REPLENISH RESTORE

In honor of Father’s Day in June, our friends at Restore asked if we would include basic toiletry items in our monthly donations: men’s and women’s deodorant, body soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Restore Volunteers shared that these personal items often go unpurchased by persons that receive assistance from Restore because of their cost. It would be an incredible gift for SSUMC to stock Restore’s shelves with these items during the early Summer months. Please consider adding these items to your June donations.
