Purpose

Our purpose is to Gather and Guide people into a loving, committed relationship with Jesus Christ.

Strategy

Our strategy is to create Environments where people are encouraged and equipped to:

  • Deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Develop relationship within the Church and our Community
  • Deliver hope and relieve suffering in our neighborhoods and beyond.

Beliefs

The United Methodist Church is an 11-million-strong global church that opens hearts, opens doors and opens minds through active engagement with our world.

John Wesley and the early Methodists placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as “practical divinity” has continued to be a hallmark of United Methodism today.

Values

We believe in working in the world for the purpose of sharing Christian love and the gospel message of Jesus Christ. We value every person as unique and created in God’s image. Each person has the privilege of identifying and pursuing their calling in life, working out their own salvation and to be involved in acts of charity. Meeting the needs of our community is vital to living out our calling as the people of God.

Journey

Our hearts, our minds, and our doors are open!

South Shore is a part of the United Methodist Church and was established in the South Shore area in 2005 as a new church start with the aim to be a relaxed, real, and relevant place for people to encounter God, the good news of Jesus Christ, and be empowered by the Holy Spirit. The church began worship in 2006 at Apollo Beach Elementary and two years later outgrew that space and moved to East Bay High School. After another two years of growth the time came to move again as South Shore United Methodist Church merged with Big Bend United Methodist Easter Sunday of 2010. Established to grow to be a regionally impacting church, the staff and leadership consistently plan for growth in program, staff, service/mission, and facilities.

The current building has undergone renovation and is continually being improved to better meet the needs of the community and church membership. As well, the church enjoys partnerships with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, MOPS and NZone Sports inviting the community to meet “at the church” where we have the opportunity to develop relationship and invite people into further involvement with the congregation.

While the church has consistently served the local and world community through mission giving and serving, currently the congregation administers a food program to address food insecurity of elementary students in the local school system (read more). In addition the church continues to support missionaries, send teams for disaster relief, and continues to develop quality relationships with area elementary, middle, and high schools.

We believe in tarrying in prayer and moving in mission. As the community of Riverview develops we seek the movement of the Holy Spirit to discern how we might be a source of hope and light. South Shore UMC looks forward to the bright future we all share in the greater Riverview area.
